    Default Digital Camera problems!!!

    Here's the scoop:

I have a Fujifilm DX-8 Digi camera. I recently purchased a USB 2.0 Card Reader. The old 2MB SmartMedia card I was using works fine in the cam, but was not recognised by the reader, so I bought a new 64MB SmartMedia card. This worked fine in the camera, and fine in the reader...UNTIL I fomatted it on the PC.

If I format it on the PC using FAT32, the camera does not recognise it ("Card not initialized"). If I format as FAT, camera recognises it, but after just 1 snap shot, it says "card full"...
I then formatted it using the camera (in the setup option) and that seemed to work. Recognised in the camera, and took about 10 pics no problems. I then opened the pic folder using the reader, and all the pics were there, seemingly in jpg format. Tried to open them in Photoshop 7 and I just get "Could not open first.jpg cause filename was not valid" ??????

The icon for these files appears as a PSD icon, but the properties of the file definately define them as jpg...

Anyone had similar problems? Or any ideas?

EDIT: Just tried to copy file across to another folder from Card and I get "Cannot copy first.jpg. The file or directory is corrupt and unreadable"... !!!!

Having only borrowed a digital cam from a friend, I don't know of this problem, but a quick look on Google tells me that you shouldn't really format the cam's memory via your PC, although this doesn't help you much now, does it?
Anyway, after a bit more trawling, I came across this site that may be of use.
    h**p://www.greenspun.com/bboard/q-and-a-one-category.tcl?topic=Imaging%20Resource%20Discussion&category=Memory

About six links down there is a link for people with problems the same as you, and although I've only flicked through the replies fleetingly, it seems some have had success using certain methods bandied about there.
There maybe more links on that page but that was the first one that I got to, so have a little gander further down the page and you might get lucky.
    Good luck mate.

    Had this problems also, Solution!

I had exatly the same problem mate!

But with my MP3 player it just wouldnt recognise it after it froze half way through transferring some mp3's.

Try what I did and let me know if it works.

Use a card wiping util (make sure you choose your Mem Card!)
that wipes the card over with zeros and ones!

Then put it back in your camera or a mates camera/mp3 player and format it from the cameras/mp3 players own menu!

I can mail U the util if you need it!

The cameras put a special header on the card and this is
recognised by the camera, when u use some PC formatters
it gets rid of this header info and then the camera doesent recognise it! and thinks the cards knackered and goes in a mood

    Hope this works for ya

    Thx for the replies lads...

After using a wipe util and trying various fixes, I resorted to emailing Fujifilm to ask their advice, and after 3 emails back and forth, they finally came up with the answer... The DX-8 does not support any card above 32MB...!!!
Fuck.. So now I have a camera which will work with a 2MB card, but a reader which wont, and a reader which will work with a 64MB card, but a camera which wont, and therefore 2 useless cards!!!
    Do I:

    A) Buy a 32MB card and HOPE that it works with the reader?
    B) Buy a new camera and use the 64MB card (mucho pesos)?

    Problem Solved!

The usb reader should work with any size card!

But if not here are some very cheap companies here to
sort you out, just sell the old reader + card on ebay.

The company's below do a storming deal on multi reader I dont think there is hardly anything it wont read & write
" Compact Flash, Smart Media, Secure Digital Cards, IBM Microdrives, MultiMedia Cards & Sony Memory Sticks"
and it only costs £10 + postage!

    http://www.oap-computers.co.uk

Also 32mb smartmedia cards are now very cheap, dont buy them from high street retailers whatever you do they are a
    right rip-off!!

    U can get 16mb for £5.90 & 32mb for £6.90 now!

From the MX2 company link below.

    Good Luck

Ta for the info genius... Unfortunately I have already placed an order for a 32MB card from Ebuyer (£9 and for £3 I can't be arse to send back)... it comes tomorrow. This should sort things, but I will keep the 64MB card as I am looking around for a new cam. Actually, I am waiting for the next news article of local elec stores being robbed before I start putting the feelers out

Anyhow... should be cool now (just need to be able to take pics for a couple of websites I have on the go)... Clients expect me to hit deadlines, how rude!

    Cheers guys
