petrol coming back up through the petrol cap

i found a patch of petrol under the my car this morning.

i took off the petrol cap and some petrol flowed out.

i came back 30 mins later took the cap off again and about 0.5 of a pint flowed out of the filler onto the pavement??

I think i may have overfilled it as it was filled right upto the cap when i first opened it. Plus today is a very hot day so could that make the petrol expand or something?

hopefully it has thrown away all the petrol it doesn't want

I would check your breather pipe for the tank, it sounds like it's blocked to me.

yeah think i just overfilled it,

it is behaving itself now i have used up some of the petrol.

It still should not spill out, I know that the Petrol and air in the tank expands but when you put the filler cap on it should open a valve between the top of the tank where air is and the filler cap to drain any petrol in the filler pipe back to the tank. To see if there is a valve on yours there should be a little 'button' type device on the inside rim of the filler hole. It might be stuck open which means that you filled all of the tank up rather than leaving some air in the tank to empty the filler pipe when the filler cap was put back on.
