Default amd 2600 running hot ?

Just put together a system using a Amd athlon xp 2600+ , it's the retail version but not even under alot of load it's running at 65c temp.
Now this seems well high compared to my P4 system , any idea's ?
Are the retail heat/fans no good ?

That is too high my man, wanna try and keep the athlons at around 50 or under really. Generally the fans they ship with the cpu are quite small, try maybe getting a larger one. Did u use thermal compound between the cpu and the heatsink??, if not do so. Also try getting a fan at the front and rear of your case, front one at the bottom bowing in and back at the top blowing out. Hope this helps

This may seem a stupid but did you check that the Athlon didn't have a "seal" on it. I know some come with some piece of plastic where the sink/fan sit that you need to remove before putting it together.

I've just got a XP2700 and it runs at 60c but under load at 65c

Thats with only the retail heatsink and fan and all the sides off my case.

Am thinking about getting this though

Yea m8, 65 degrees C is WAY too hot, ive only got one case fan and one heatsink (not the retail one, a much better one!) on my P3 1.2GHz and even under A LOT of load it only reaches 38 degrees C MAX!!

Now this seems well high compared to my P4 system
Yes, Pentium based systems do tend to run at a cooler speed from what I've heard, AMD's are bad for overheating without the propper cooling!

Remember that Pentiums run cooler than Athlons generally anyway so its not a fair comparison - but 65 degree was a bit hot.

I have a 2400+ Athlon with the retail fan runs at 48C - But I did use artic silver compound and as others have suggested have a front and back fan on the case.

    Cheers

allways a good idea to make sure wires inside pc are nice and tidy, add rounded cables if possible and if the high temps really bug you get two fans (Intake and exhaust) to shift the warm air in ya pc.

    i have a 2600 @ 41c (34c with my 120mm fans but way too noisy)

tidy case with front and rear fan giving premium airflow thru case is a must
