cant go into stand by mode

my pc is a dell xp home machine and i wanted to stick it in stand by mode the other night as i couldnt leave it on it was making to much noise so i decided to stick it in stand by mode as its usally allot quieter almost silent then but when i pressed the stand by button on xp my pc started to shut down and get ready for standby but it just crashed :/ and when ever i try to put it in stand by now it just crashes is there anything i can do to sort this prob out?

Have tried Windows update? I'm sure somewhere along the 5 zillion updates for winxp ms have released I have seen one that solved an "standby crash" issue?
