Default wheres all my hd gone

ive managed to save a film in wmv format using the windows movie maker (teach me for thinking "it cant be THAT bad" wont it) the problem is that just after i realised this i re-saved the file as an avi in the same program, but when i saved it as an avi i thought go for the top file size its not going to that big, may as well keep the quality till i encode to mpg/dvd the problem was that after 5 mins i checked it and it was out putting the file fine, except for the file size it was coming up at 18gb so i stoped it and thought nothing more of it just went to my normal package and tried to do it there but now im out of space on the hd i know there was 15-18gb of free space there before this file was generated and now theres just 550mb ive searched the temp files everything just cant find it to delete, any ideas??

btw its a 40gb "normally when im emptying the bins"

    cas

    edit:
please ignor me for being a thick get id emptied the recycle bin but forgot to empty the norton protected recycle bin (i sat here swearing at it)

A simalar thing happened to me, i have a second h\d thats 120 g, i new that there was only 20 gig used up but for some reason it stated in prpoerties that i had just 500 m\bs free, realy lost my rag with it, took my side case off and i had a loose power socket to the m/b, this fixed it!
    Just a thought, good luck.

lol, happens to everyone time to time...

FYI: An uncompressed AVI film is over 80gb...

(Not sure how much coz that's when my HDD space ran out!!)

    DVD uses MPEG2 Compression matey.

Let's do the math shall we?...

Imagine taking a single frame from a film. It would be a similar size to a jpg compressed picture 30-40k... Now convert it to uncompressed bitmap... 1MB-ish, multiply that by 29 (frames per second) 29mb... Now multiply that by 60 (secs in minute)... That's 1.740Gb a minute. Now multiply that by 120 (avg mins in film) 208.8GB...

Then there's the audio too about a gig or so...

    You're right on all 3 counts! A DVD's 9gb tops. An uncompressed AVI isn't anywhere near 80GB...

    ..and you're no expert!! :tongue
