News Kid - NTL box question...

Hi Guys my Dads just moved house and has given me his old NTL cable TV Box. Someone has just offered to chip the box for me for £150 so that I can get all available channels. I’m new to this and just wanted to know if it’s worth doing? I’m with BT at the moment so I guess that I would have to take out NTLs basic package then off I go?

    Thx for any advise!

Seeing as you've got your own box, £150 is a lot.

Why not checkout some of the guides (www.helpfiles.co.uk or www.freewebs.com/the-vortex/) and try to do it yourself.

Cheers for the links phizz81 - It all seems pretty easy'ish, I did'nt realise.

Just wondering if I would get ALL channels and if there's any package that I should consider getting from NTL?

At present I'm with BT and use Virgins ADSL service - So I would need to cancel both before I made the change.

Would it be worth me getting NTL BB also?

    Thx for the help people,

    dEVS!

You would only have to get NTL broadband m8, as the cable box uses the same cable, you would just need a splitter

Before you do anything go to page 7 of the engineer's menu to check what type of card you have, as if it's a rom 10 rev a3c or rom 11 rev b08 then you will need to read the chips.

Thanks for the ino rick2021 I'll give them a buzz tomorrow and see what broadband deals I can get out of them?

Just to check - there's no problems with using a splitter, it doesn't make it more suss that your using a chiped box or anything like that does it? Just thought that I read something somewhere... Is this the set up that you use?

@ phizz81 could you plz let me know how I get to the engineer's menu on the box? Sorry but like a said I'm new to all this ;(
Trust that I can get the menu up without a subscription?

    Cheers guys,

While holding up & down power up the box, keeping the buttons held until the menu comes up (c. 20-30 secs).

N.B. Not the channel up and down, but the other ones.

Go to page 7 of the menu to find the card details (e.g. dnasop10 reva16)

No they will never know you are using a splitter, or the modded box providing you have disabled talkback

Hi Guys okay I'm getting somewhere now...

Phizz81 I took a look at the engineer's menu and I have the following card...

    DNASP010 Rev A3C

So I take it that I will need to read the chips on the box? do you know the easiest way for me to do this?

Also rick2021 cheers for the info m8! do you know where I can buy a splitter from to get the box rigged up via the BB internet install?

    Cheers,

    dEVS!

Cheers guys for all your info. I've been in a similar situation and your no-nonsense 'not sharing my knowledge with novice' advice is greatly appreciated. The links are great too. I just need to get a box to play with now. It's been a right pain to get one. Do you know of anywhere?
Am I right to believe that only locked boxes have rev a3c? About if it shows Pace on the display?
