    Default Pipex Speeds on 1MB

Just upgraded to 1MB but it seems pretty slow, I have doen a speed test on adslguide.org and got the following results:

    Direction
    Actual Speed True Speed (estimated)

    Downstream 454 Kbps (56.8 KB/sec) 490 Kbps (inc. overheads)
    Upstream 217 Kbps (27.1 KB/sec) 234 Kbps (inc. overheads)

Surely this isnt right, it looks slower than 512k/s. I know contention could affect this. What speed do others on pipex or any isp fro that matter get?

    Cheers

From those speeds above, I'd say your upgrade hasn't actually taken place yet.
Understeer is when you hit a wall with the front of your car
Oversteer is when you hit the wall with the back of your car
Horsepower is how fast your car hits the wall
Torque is how far your car sends the wall across the field once you've hit it

But it says I am connected at 1.1Mbps. Its so strange because things seem to be slower now than when I was on 512. From newsgroups (pipex) I am getting aroung 30kb/s whereas before I would get around 40kb/s. Also I am getting 6kb/s from an FTP server which is on 512 in the UK.

I would contact Pipex then, because the speeds you first posted are definately what I would expect to see from a 512kbps connection.

Install a proper network monitor and check your speeds with a known fast site (Microsoft, for example). Whatever you do, don't rely on Windows to tell you the truth about download speeds.

There could be any number of reasons for that, including (but not limited to), the state of the other users connection, how many people were connected when you were downloading, the user themselves having a download on the go, routing, etc.

Yes I realise that I was just giving examples. Where can I get a proper network monitor? I have emailed pipex!

NetStat Live by AnalogX will do you fine (it's free as well)

    OK Downloaded and installed (cheers)
    Incoming:
    Current:34.5k/s
    Average:36k/s
    Max: 69k/s

    Outgoing
    Current: 520B
    Average: 530B
    Max: 10K/s

Looks very slow to me, even the max!

    OK then, try this mate

Click on this link here and select the option to save it (it is Win 2K SP3).

When it is downloading, check your speed then (you should max out at around 120KB/s)
If you are still only getting 60KB/s (or thereabouts) then I would say that you haven't been upgraded (or Pipex are having serious problems).

Well the File Download window reported 6.5k/s
    But the network moniter reported:

    Incoming:

Current: 8-12k/s(kept jumping between the two)
    Average:8.9k/s
    Max:120.8k/s

The max was there before I started the download of SP3. So it looks like I have been upgraded, but still getting shite transfer rates!

The fact that you have already got 120K as a max indication means that you have got a 1Mbit service (at least one of your downloads has hit full speed).
I can only assume that Pipex are having issues within their own part of the network ATM (I was only getting 6-7KB/s on Thursday with that very same file due to ISP problems).

    P.S
Don't hold your breath waiting for a response to your e-mail to Pipex

@ Pegasus Team, I d/l NetStat Live and it's says the max d/l I can get is 914.9KB/S and the max u/l I can get is 990KB/S??? And when I d/l file from places like bit torrent it says I'm d/l at 14KB/S when bit torrent says 31KB and sometimes bit torrent says 31KB/S and it says 41KB/S.

What's going on here??? I'm on BT Openworld broadband (512KB/S).

Well I dont know what pipex/BT are playing at. I emailed them from my hotmail account and they replied saying they want me to phone them so they could do some line tests.

Next I get an email from pipex to my pipex mail account saying that because of some mistake the regrade had not taken place. They are gonna email me when its taken place.

So I guess i need to wait and see!
