Police in California say they will file multiple charges of child abuse against the pop star Michael Jackson.

A warrant has been issued for his arrest. Police say they are negotiating with his lawyers for the singer to hand himself in and surrender his passport.

Mr Jackson is suspected of abusing a 12-year old child who Santa Barbara district attorney Tom Sneddon said was co-operating with the authorities.

The maximum sentence for child abuse in California is eight years.

its guilty untill proven inocent, i dont think hes done out, all of a sudden hes back in the papers at the same time he had a greatest hits dvd and cd out, i fink sum1s trying 2 cash in on him, he only built neverland and invites kids there 2 save tax (no profit, not 4 personal use, tax saver), if he did do anything it wud have been proven long ago, the guy has 3 kids 4 **** sake, i seriously doubt hes did anything, and just cos hes had 1 2 many face lifts doesnt make him weird, he has more money than sense hes intitled 2 do stupid shit with it he earnd it

Police in California say they will file multiple charges of child abuse against the pop star Michael Jackson.

Police have issued a warrant for his arrest, and say they are negotiating with his lawyers for the singer to hand himself in and surrender his passport.

Santa Barbara Sheriff Jim Anderson said bail would be set at $3m.

A spokesman for Mr Jackson - who is reportedly suspected of abusing a 12-year old child - called the allegations "false" and "scurrilous".

"Michael would never harm a child in any way. These scurrilous and totally unfounded allegations will be proven false in a courtroom," Stuart Backerman said on behalf of the singer.

He said Mr Jackson was returning to Santa Barbara immediately.

Deadline

Law enforcement officials had earlier told a news conference that they had given Mr Jackson a deadline to hand himself in, but would not say when that was.

The 45-year-old entertainer is believed to have been shooting a music video in Las Vegas.

About 70 police officers searched Mr Jackson's ranch, Neverland, on Tuesday, looking for "evidence that would corroborate the victim's statements," Sheriff Anderson said.

"We encourage the public to come forward if they have any information to lead us to believe there are other victims in the community," he added.

The investigation is being led by the same district attorney, Tom Sneddon, who looked into similar allegations 10 years ago.

Mr Jackson denied those claims and no charges were ever filed, but the singer made a multi-million dollar out-of-court settlement.

The alleged victim declined to testify in a criminal case after the settlement.

'More co-operative'

Mr Sneddon said California law had changed as a result of the earlier Jackson investigation, and implied that law enforcement authorities had a more co-operative witness this time.

"This investigation is different from the last investigation," Mr Sneddon said.

"There were never any charges brought in that investigation. I can assure you that within a very short period of time, multiple counts will be filed."

Mr Jackson could face up to eight years in prison per count of abuse.

His latest CD, a greatest hits compilation featuring the new single One More Chance, went on sale on Tuesday.

He had a string of huge hits in the late 1980s and early 1990s, but his popularity has waned in the past decade.

The bloke is clearly disturbed, there's no doubt about that, but whether he's committed any crime hasn't been proved as yet, being eccentric and trying to recapture a childhood you never had is no crime and you people with narrow minds ought to look inwards at your own behaviour, then consider whether you have the right to judge anyone. Maybe if your life was examined every hour of every day with a microscope by everyone and his fukin photographer then we might discover something about you that is fukin weird.

The previous case where he settled out of court was dubious to say the least, what family, knowing their child had been abused, would be happy just to take the cash and not pursue the matter in court, if it was my child no amount of money would stop me from making sure that justice was done. Could this be another family after some cash?

If he is guilty then he deserves everything thats coming to him. I'd lock up Uri Geller too.
