This could be a number of things. Have you tried with differnt memory or a differnet HD.

Its better to burn out than to fade away...............

its a process of elimination.you have to change different parts of the pc with parts that you know work one by one until you get to the problem.it could be hardware or software.write eveything down you change and just keep trying.try a different graphics card with your motherboard.then try hard drive.its takes time, sorry cant be more help but your best changing 1 thing at a time.
    good luck

    yeah ditto
Only thing he can do is check that things arnt over heating I expect that everyting is fine for about 30 minutes or an hour then things start going a bit pants.
Check the temperature of the major components feel the memory, hardrive, cpu heatsink and the like and see if they are hot not just warm. if all seems cool and you dont burn your hands when you touch them you then need to look at the drivers that are installed for the motherboard and IDE controler. best places to start.

Let us know how he gets on.

Also leaving the side of the pc off can often solve over heating problems.

If you have 2 memory sticks, try running it with just one, then the other, this should either eliminate or incriminate the memory.

Sisoft Sandra can be used to monitor the CPU temp for you.
