Default good graphics card for the price?

been offered a A-Tek ATI Radeon 9000 Pro 128MB for £45 inc del.

not really knowing too much about graphics cards, can anyone tell me if the price is right and if this will handle the better games out there? read a few reviews - problem is they all seem pretty dated !

    many thanks

Thats a last generation ATI card. Price seems ok. The card itself is basically a direct x 9 supported Radeon 8500. I'd suggest going with the 9600 SE at a bare minimum.

depends on what you have know and what you want to be able to play - this card is cheap but wont get your very far (maybe 12 months tops) - and considering Halflife 2, doom 3 etc are coming out next year you may find it under powered and another upgrade required - Like Jugaholic.....jugaholic, what the hell is a jug a holic ??...anyway, guess I cant talk about funny names....Like Jugaholic says getting a ATI 9600 minimum is possibly a better bet.

    BuLLd0g ,

I have the ATI Radeon 9000 Pro (64MB version) and for the price seems good value, I paid about £80 when it first came out probably a year ago. It handles all the usually windows video, 2D stuff and DirectX 9 without any problems with excellent clarity. I don't go on games very often at all so I'm not much use for that but it runs 3D Mark (the latest one) very well without going slugish at all. I am very happy with mine as it replaced an old ASUS NVidia 256 card (might have been the 6800 with TV-in, 3d glasses feature etc...) and the clarity of picture is very good both on my CRT monitor and LCD (which I mainly use). Dead happy with mine... I would be interested in getting one for my other machine for £45...

I have a Athlon 1700XP with 512DDR for what its worth...

    Crossman.

why that? just go get a Radeon 9600XT 256Mb from overclockers £148.88 and it beats the nearest matches of FX5700 Ultra when the AA and AF and as usual the nVidia wins in the synthetics but its gamplay that counts better still stretch another £40 and get a 9800SE

hmmm.... it's 3 times the price for the 9600XT compaired to what he's thinking for buying.

depends on your desires and finances.
