Being somewhat a newbie myself and wanting to create Multigame Discs i found xISO v1.15 did the trick this lets you read your backups on your PC through a normal DVDRom Drive :thumbs

You can read back up's on your pc but you cant read original Xbox games on your pc.
I think you have to ftp the original game first.
As for putting a Xbox drive in you pc, here is some info mate.

You cant put a Xbox drive in a PC and get it to work - its firmware is not one that can be seen on a normal PC. You can put a PC DVDrom drive into an Xbox with a little soldering and modding to get it to work but then you cannot read original Xbox games. But whats the point - DVDR's are getting better and its easy to get ones that work in most Xbox's and you can FTP the files from an Xbox to a PC using Internet explorer - doesnt get much easier than that. Hence moving DVDR drives around is just not needed.
