NetPD is a British company that uses technology to catch music pirates on the internet. The firm was hired by Metallica to gather evidence for their lawsuit against Napster. Thrust into the limelight through the Napster trial, the firm contracts with Sony, the RIAA, Paul Simon, George Michael, Destiny's Child, and other artists to track down computer users who swap their client's copywrited songs on the web, and take appropriate action. Active this school year, so far NetPD's actions have been to crack down on college students- where file-sharing saw its beginnings.

First, the Forbes article below provides background about NetPD. Second, the Chronicle of Higher Education article from this November discribes NedPD's Fall 2001 techniques: busting college students. Following that is a reverse chronological listing of news reports about NetPD's actions at colleges and universities around the nation. ITCS employees indicated that U-M has recieved "15-20" complaints from NetPD, but it remains unclear what has happened to the students implicated.

What does PeerGuardian actually do?
PeerGuardian closes connections on specified IP addresses, it uses a blocklist based on the PG IP database. It also optionally logs all connections made to your computer. The reason for this is so that if you do use PeerGuardian and still get sent a legal threat, you can cross-reference the date/time of the alleged infringement with the log.

Is PeerGuadian 100% Protection?
No!! - PeerGuardian relies on users sharing information to stay up to date. It IS contributory to protection and it's generally accepted as the most up-to-date and open database of this nature on the internet. The more people who are using full-logging and report the relevant IPs when they get sent legal threats (see next paragraph), the more people we can help.

I use PeerGuardian and have still been sent a legal threat, what do I do?
1. Claim you thought the file was a demo/trailer/remix/etc (even if it is 700MB!!).
2. Try sharing older/rarer files.
3. Check the "full connection log" in PeerGuardian. - Work out the difference in timezones on the infringment warning and cross-reference it with the log to get a list of suspect IPs. - Report them to peerguardian.net

Ever thought of this?

Think of outsourcing to India...now think of the RIAA outsourcing to companies with IP addresses that are not blacklisted. This is happening all the time now, the safest way to make sure they can't catch you is do it through a secure shell (ssh) but a windows client as people are stupid enough to use windows. Anyway, it wouldn't be that hard to do as making it a secure download with maybe a disclaimer can block all the people who want a piece of you...

i have been using it for a while now.... about a year.

yes it does work and when set at a high agression (90%) by default it will block connections from the specified ip ranges.

it will also cause crashes and can bugger up the winsock settings on the blocked connecting puter.

i know this because i found out my boss was using remote desktop to spy on what i was doing at work on my pc. so i put his ip into the block range and it blocked him with no problem.

but it also buggered his winsock setting too

he had to enter his password every time he wanted to surf the net, send or collect email, and even connecting to our servers at work.

all his security settings were shagged and he ended up having to format and reinstall xp to get things back to normal.

nedless to say i never told him what had happened, or why . but i diddnt get spyed on again

just hope it does the same thing to the undesirables who try to spy on us out there
