Default Rebootin Problem im goin insane

Rite guys, i wont bre you with all the shit thats happened to me over the last 4 or 5 days, lets just say i now have grey hair and am on prozac

    Asus A7V600 motherboard
    AMD Athlon 3200+XP CPU
    Maxtor serial ATA 160gig Drive
    512Meg of Crucial DDR400
    MSI Geoforce 4 Ti 4200 8X AGP

basicly the pc was rebootin itself without warning and steadily got worse, then i bought a 160gig serial ata maxtor hard drive and was gettin windows xp errors during setup of XP.

last nite i installed an old athlon 1400 (not athlon xp) and since i have installed it the pc has been workin fine, no random rebooting, no windows xp setup error, i installed winXP no problems at all.

So now im left with not knowing what is makin the pc reboot, i dunno if its the 3200+XP chip, or is it the motherboard, or could it be as simple as the heatsink and fan.

Any help on this one would be REALLY REALLY appreciated guys as this is the totally worse problem ive ever had (including all the other shit).

    cheers, heres hopin

oh i forgot to say, i have tried new ram, and a new graph card so i know its not them, they are both ok

is your chip overheating? try feeling if the heatsink is really hot as it reboots.

i wouldnt recommend swapping procs around beacuse it will cause probs in the long run, plus it would be annoyign having to swap them everytime you want the pc to work for a long time.

as i said probably overheating. ensure proper coolage

i already put the 1400 in and installed xp m8, but trouble is, if i put the 3200 back in now then its gonna just start rebooting again.

i think after talkin to a few people that the heatsink and fan could be fuked, im gonna get a new heatsink and fan, and im also gonna get the 3200 tested in another pc, then i should know for sure.

    cheers guys

Good plan, I had problems with my old board and were fixed by resitting the heatsink and fan. Your rebooting could be the CPU overheating system which is standard on most boards now. The heatsink and fan could be the wrong way around but make sure before buying a new fan.

    Good Luck,

Got a decent PSU in there??. Sounds a bit suss if it reboots a lot with a 3200 in there but doesn't with a 1400 (less power drain). Could be heat as well mind you.....

Yeah m8, when i bought the 3200+XP i bought a boss blue aliminium twin fan 550watt PSU, its even got 8 power connecters whic really come in handy.

anyway guys cheers for the replies but ive sorted it now.

After all the trouble it caused me EVERY one of the problems was down to virus,s, ive put the 3200+ back in now and its runnin sweet as a nut, no rebootin, virus free.

Turns out that there is an 8meg partition on your hard drive that winxp puts there, this is most likely where the virus was hidin as soon as i formatted the virus was there right away(found that searchin the net).

and i nearly bought a new cpu and motherboard, and i DID buy a new hard drive.
so thanks for the replies guys,
