Can't get AM radio on new stereo

Just got a new panasonic stereo which plays mp3's and wma files from a cd
(14 LP's on one cd using wma files 96 bit rate) but I can't receive medium wave radio anymore (talk sport listener).
If I put in my old vw radio then I can get it, put the panasonic back in and it's gone.
Anyone any ideas on what i can do to improve my reception

I've had this a few times when fitting a new stereo & it's always turned out to be a bad connection between the aerial lead plug & the radio on the earth/shielded part of the plug. Seems to be worse if you need to use an adaptor for the connection to the back of the stereo. Try it on AM with the stereo hanging out of the dash and wiggle the aerial wire & see if you get reception then.

thanks jack i will give it a go,it does say in the book that a bad reception could be cause by a bad earth.
it's just it was fitted by a car electrician so i thought it would be alright electrically,but i'll try myself it's not the first time i've been mugged off by a tradesman :|

To be fair, you fit the stereo, put it on Capital or Radio One FM & if that works you think it's OK. It's only when someone wants to listen to the footy on Capital Gold AM that they come back screaming at you!
