Default Wrong disk space under NTFS

    Hi all,
got a slight problem with a 5Gig partition for drive C, running win xp and
formatted to NTFS. You look at the disk space under 'My Computer' panel, and
it tells me that i have used twice the actual disk space than i should have. If you select all the folders/files on C drive and do 'Properties', it gives me the
correct disk space used!. How do I cure this problem. Unfortunately the system behaves if I don't have the actual space (running low on disk space!).

    Thanks

by default XP has system restore turned on, mine had the same problem and about a gig of stuff was backed up..........go into the properties tab in my computer and turn it off, should sort it out.........
of course it could be loads of other things, but this may help...

File sizes and file space used are not the same.

i.e. the disk is broken down to lots of sections and if a file is slightly bigger than 1 section it uses 2 sections and the remaining space in the second sector is Lost and unuseable by other files.

You have got "show hidden files selected" i take it.

i.e. the pc i am currently using shows 10.2gb space used but only 8.35gb is actual data.

Well, turned off System Restore as suggested and recovered @500M!.

Yep, i do have hidden files shown, but I guess i'll have to live with the true file allocations against data?

Even better now, removed 'Hibernation" and "Swap file" allocations from C drive, getting an additional 1.3 Gigs!
