Recommendations for buying a new laptop

Hello:

My sister wants to buy a new laptop by any major brand, up to $2000US. I told her that she should make sure it is Pentium IV, 30 GB harddrive, 512 memory. As my knowledge is quite limited, this is about all I knew to tell her.

So two questions:

1. Can you recommend a reliable brand/model?
2. Can you tell us which other features we should be inquiring about? I suppose the screen.

Not really a laptop man but there's plenty good ones about. You need something that will suit your sister. Stuff like HDD, Screen, Graphics and CPU will depend on what will she be using her laptop for. Your suggested specs are perfect. As for manufacturers there's loads. Acer, Toshiba, Sony, as long as the specs are right for your sister a manufacturer isn't really that important.

Think about what you wanna use it for. I just got a new one. Decided on what i wanted the lappy to do then worked the specs out. My requirements were:

dvd-+r drive
64mb proper graphics i.e. not shared or no-name brand
wireless networking built in

used dealtime to search based on my requirements.

found the laptop i wanted and searched for the best price.

something else to consider: battery life. Intels new centrino really does make a battery last.

incidently my choice ended up being an acer 803lmi

and i bought a 3 year manufacturers warranty with it.
