Default mk3 golf mileage display fault

    hi, hope someone can help.

my golf mk3 (95) mileage display lcd screen seems to be faulty and shows jumbled random information, sometimes part of the mileage and sometimes the service indicator . i bought a second hand replacement clock set with the intent of just swapping them over and getting the mileage altered, the unit's made by twr and needs to be reset by an eeprom connection - so i'm told. unfortunately the guy i asked to do the work was unable to reprogram the mileage.

i wonder if anyone could advise if i could get round the problem by simply swapping the lcd panels over, or failing that swapping the eeprom chips over as i presume this is where the mileage data is stored?

    thanks

Are they both TWR units? If not parts are not swapable. You can fit a VDO (complete unit) in the car too - just make sure its from a diesel if you car is diesel and vice versa for petrol. The rev counters are calibrated differently, and there would be a diesel heater lamp etc.

Your problem sounds for the world like an LCD fault. A bad eeprom or data corrupt usually leaves a blank display.

    Hope this helps.

    hi,

    thanks for that.

they are both twr units with the same part number. i stripped the units down and swapped the lcd panels over and gave that a try but no joy, the exact same problem is still there. thought that sounded too easy!!

i bought the new unit with the intention of just swapping them over and paying someone to alter the mileage, as i've no idea about how they work etc. the bloke that tried to do it said his equipment read the mileage but wouldnt alter it, he was talking about removing the eeprom but decided it was too risky.

can anyone reset the twr unit or would it be easier to get a vdo one?

Yes, if you swap the eeprom from one dash into the other it might help, but if both dashes are reading gibberish, I'm not sure it will work.. TRW's fitted to Mk111 Golf are fairly easy to adjust the miles on if you have gear for doing that or know someone who has. But - hang on - if you are getting part of the mileage coming up on the LCD display, it seems more like an LCD fault, for example a bad connection between the board and the display. Possible ? .

    thanks for the info.

i noticed that the speedo was flickering at higher speeds too so thought best to get the mileage altered on the newer one. got another bloke to have a look and he's altered it no probs.
