    It costs a fortune m8.

Nominet wanted to charge me over £100 for 1 domain. So what I'm going to do with mine is surrender it so they relist and I'm gonna try and snag it again.

no its 80 plus vat if you do it directly with nominet.

however if you have a host in mind and they agree to take the fee for you (£5+vat for nominet memebers instead of 80 for the public) then all you have to do is pay £15 to have the domain "retagged" and chose an agent/member's tag to put it on. the agent/memeber will then be billed by nominet at the inside rate of £5+vat per 2 years making your total cost to get the domain back online £20+vat

was the domain automatically detagged under the new system or was it manually done on the old automatom. not that it really matters....

if you need any further help or want to retag your names to our tag i'll do it for you at cost depending where you want the name servers pointing

I think it has to re-registered through the hosting company it was originally registered with to re-tag it for the cheaper price as they have to let go of the domain first.

nah nominet system doenst work like that anymore. if he uses the nominet website and pays the 15+vat retagging fee he can have it put back on *anyones* tag. he also has to pay 80ish unless he says "new tag holder will pay" and in that case nominet ring the company with the tag to check for authorisation.

under the new system the company doesnt have to "let go" like before, all this posotive renewals shit means the domain is automatically suspended unless it is manually renewed as opposed to the opposite way round like it used to be...

I must be blind, didn't see this thread.

Can anyone retag a domain or does it have to be the registered user? I ask this cos I used a fake name when I signed up for a free domain name a while ago. Now I want to get it back officially.

Also, If I just leave it alone will it automatically be available to register by anyone after a certain period of time?

    cheers

yeh just leave it till it drops off if you've given them fake details because you have to fax them etc so you're going to have to assume this fake identity to get it back ;p thehn they reserve the right to take the domain back and nab your money if they discover you didnt have authority to get it back ;\

From past experience its normally 2 years from the date of the last renewal payment being missed, this would make the date it becomes available around: 29-Sep-2005... so all in all a long time off. I'm still watching a few domains that were detagged in 2002, so they should be coming up for grabs soon
