Some registrars will cross reference your domain whois details with your credit card details. If you pay with paypal or something like that then you could get away with making up an address or using a PO box. If you register and pay with cash or paypal with somplace who dont really care like fragtech.net or domainofmyown.com then your sorted.Originally Posted by sanjuro
You can ask whoever you are buying your domain from to not put your details on the whois lookup I've had them do this before and they just add there info.
Failing that you could take a look at somthing like this http://www.no-ip.com/ - not sure if its what your after or not?

and then on top of that you've got to try and avoid stuff like ICANN complaining of "false whois" information: most Registration Agreement's state that the "contact information" must be "complete and accurate" or they will cancel the domain.
I once got the following forwarded to me with a threat to cancel the domain:
"Whois Data Problem Report":
"Errors in Registrant Information:
Name:INCORRECT
Address:INCORRECT
Phone:INCORRECT
Description:
The name, address and phone number are obviously fake"
Well i did use 1 Any Street, and phone number 0123456789. Hehe. But what to do (if you can change it yourself) is just use the registrar's info. It'll never be anonymous (unless you get someone else to pay for it) but stop anyone else finding your details easily.

I changed my details to random ones because some french scammer was using my details to con people on some auction site. Got phone calls from french police, auction companies and his bumped customers... Police recon he got my details from my WHOIS record. Now I always register them with fake or random details.
it depends on who you want to remain anon to...
If it's just general browsers, then yeah, you can just use fake deets, but if it's the authorities, then nope - they will find you! - They will go form your IP address at that time, then to your ISP and then.....
