    Default Atkins diet questions

    The induction phase (2 weeks)

Does this mean you can't have ANY carbs at all in this 2 week period? Is there a certain amount you can have?

Also, is it possible to have a few alcoholic drinks on a Saturday then resume the diet during the week?

ps Is there any special chewing gums that can be used during the diet?

you can have up to 20 carbs a aday and although your not supposed to you can have a beer or 5 as long as you realise that it will slow you down and possibly stop you completely for a couple of days

    True words said there,

    Atkins + Alcohol.

Atkins works by reducing your glycogen stores and putting you into ketosis.
Stick to spirits and diet soda are the best best as these type of calories are neither simple or complex sugars and are not stored when drunk although you will stop being in Ketosis until all the calories in the alcohol have been burnt.

It will put you back a day...but also when you get drunk you eat a kebab....etc.

No more than 20g's of carbs a day, I found a great 10g sweet too, the new Double Cream eggs from Nestle.

Kebabs are actually ok, just leave out the sauce, the bread is ok too in all honesty but it isn't when you have been drinking as your body will be using the energy from the alcohol as fuel the bread willl just end up being store.

If a product is labelled as sugar free the only thing that could mean there is carbds in there was if it had fibre inside.

Wrigleys only make on sugar free gum and thats Orbit though isn't it?

Atkins recommends that you cut out all caffeine so as not to cause your blood pressure to drop. Nescafe decaf should be OK, just check the back label and maybe drink it black.

Those Nestle cream eggs are the business. Half of one each day and you get a sweet sweet dose of chocolate without the guilt of too many carbs.

Atkins works. At the moment I've given up beer and my tipple of choice is gin and slimline tonic. Zero carbs in the tonic, I'm not too sure about the gin but it is low. But if you do have a few just be prepared to wait a few days to get back on track.

remember that after the induction phase you can up the carb intake until you find a level that suits your body. So it's really only two weeks of no carbs, then you can start to have a few.

Honestly the last month has been an eye-opener. When you look at the information labels on the back of products and see how nay of the carbs are made up from sugar, it can be quite surprising.

I've been on Atkins now a month, and the weight fell off in the first two weeks like you'd expect. Since I've been losing weight, but extremely slowly. It often rises a kg which will then come off in the next day again. Anyone experience this or have any ideas? BTW I drink over 3 litres of water a day and am still in the 20g of carb range

Another thing about Carbs is when you look at the packets remember this.

Packet says: Total Carbs 20g ------- Fibre 10g

Subtract the Fibre from the carbs and this will give you the real carb count, Fibre is considered a carbohydrate but does not actually count on Atkins.

Alternatively some packets are labelled ...Total Carbs 20g of which are Sugars 10g meaning only the sugars are what you should count

Neither, your body would enter ketosis which is when the body fat is used for energy, only once you burnt all the fat up would you fall over and die

Apparently Allinson are making a low carb bread, (Basically bread without any added sugar) which is 10g carbs instead of 19g per slice.
