Default Asus A7N8X - CPU upgrade to Barton 2500 problem

This is my current system :

Asus A7N8X (rev 2.0 with latest BIOS) NOT Deluxe
    Athlon XP 1800
    2x256Mb PC3200 Twinmos CL2.5 memory
    Sapphire Radeon 9600 XT (Fireblade)
    Seagate Barracuda IV 80Gb drive
    Nexus NX-3500 350W PSU.

The system is working fine but I decided to upgrade the CPU to a Barton 2500. The Asus website said that it was compatible with the A7N8X.

However when changing to the Barton CPU, there is no post (no video, no beeps, but fans start up etc)

I cleared the CMOS but no difference.
I have tried the memory in every available slot but no difference.
I have tried different memory no difference.

    Can anyone help please ?

If you put the old chip back in does it work fine again???

If so i reckon your 2500 chip is faulty. If the 1800 chip no longer works then it's looking like the m/board has blown.

Yes it works fine if the XP1800 is put back in. However, the 2500 works fine in a friends motherboard.

This may be due to jumper settings. If you have your jumpers set up for the 1800xp chip you may need to change them for the baron 2500.

Even on a "jumperless" board set to auto this could be the problem as my father found out. The problem was his processor chip was very new and the motherboard firmware couldn't detect the appropriate settings so he had to flash update the bios/cmos.

Try setting the fbus and multiplier manually or setting everything to safe mode (100mhz). If you don't have the manual it should be on the Asus website.
