PS2 Knackered

For a while now my PS2 has been making clicking noises everytime i put a cd in. I mainly use CDrs on it, but then a couple of weeks ago my games wouldn't boot at all, the laser just kept clicking. It took it 5 or 6 times to actually start reading the disk. Now a few days ago, it wouldn't even boot at all. The Browser screen came on straight away and I couldn't even hear the laser try to read the CD.

I had a look inside and all the CD was doing was moving a fraction of an inch then stopping. So today I took it to Dunstall to see if i could get it repaired. A bloke there had a look at it and told me he thinks its the laser.

He said I can get a new laser installed if i wanted but it will probably go again. He says the chip ive got isn't any good now (dont worry i know this can't be discussed here). But he said my best option was to ring Sony, they will charge me �60 - �70 and send me a new PS2. I said "but warrenties over and the void sticker is missing" and he told me to just send it, they won't bother checking, they will just send a new one. He gave me the number to ring anyway.

So whats my best bet? Send it to Sony and hope they send a new one for �60? Or get a new laser in this (if it is the laser at fault, the bloke wasn't sure by the sound of him)

Surely if you send it off to Sony they will see the chip and lack of Warranty Sticker and report you?? Can you not get in touch with the guy who put the chip in to have a look?

nah mate, i bought it pre-modded well over a year or 2 ago now. I explained what you just said to the bloke who had a look at it for me at the comp fair and he said just rip the chip out, send it to them and they will just send another. I said "but its out of warrenty" and he said "thats why they charge you �60 - �70, if you had the warrenty you wouldn't have to pay that much."

Best bet is ot get a new laser.
MIne was totally fooked, replaced laser now works a treat
I see no point in replacing chip when it works fine.
Laser replacement is only 5 - 10 min job and your back in business no hassle with sending here & there & worrying bout warranty & stuff.
All lasers need replacing at some stage - go for it

i think i'll do that then mate, is it easy to replace it yourself? or is it best to have someone do it?

its pretty easy to fit yourself, but whether u can actually get a laser depends on the ps2 version.

as for sony, they will swap out a ps2 for 60 quid no questions asked.

i really dont know what to do now. i think i may just get a new laser though, i guess if that don't work i can still keep the new laser and send my PS2 off to Sony and get a replacement. The only thing that i'm worried about is the mod in there and the warrenty sticker missing. But the bloke at the comp fair was certain they wouldn't even check.

Maltloaf, could you verify how you know they won't check m8? I am asking this as a friend is now having the same issue and is very keen to get it fixed...

I'm not 100% sure, but about 95% sure they won't mind, because if I remember correctly, a member of another forum had this problem and he rang sony, they picked up the console and swapped it with a new one at the door, then the delivery guy just took the old one back to sony. The delivery guy is just a parcel force guy or sumthing, so he has no right to check and prob doesn't really care. Even if it is chipped, sony are going to refurbish it, or use is for spares no matter what, so to them it don't matter!

You could just take it to where u bought it, if they can chip consoles then they must have a repair service of some sort.

I am swapping my new silver ps2 which is faulty for brand new one on wednesday.... By sony..

Rang them, they took my details, coming and exchanging wednesday..not bad, had a chip in there but had it taken out and sticker put back on..

i can m8, did it wiv mine if it is not a mark 7 or ps2 silver then they will ask for �70 i think it is to change the guy who comes to ur crib is just a courier, i mean kevin keegan has probably got more intelligence than the guy who turns up on ur doorstep

Guy has just turned up with a new silver ps2 (boxed), asked my girlfriend to sign for it and left..didnt ask for the knackered one.

HE LEFT ME WITH TWO PS2'S!!!!!!!!HAHAHAHAHA

Gonna wait 2 weeks and do it again from a m8's house!
