Default IE Crashing & Sound Problem

Hi guys. Having a problem with a works pc.

Running XP pro, IE 6 and media player 9

When windows starts, sound is fine, and i can run media player no probs. Then if i load another prog, i lose all sound (media player contines to play the files, but no noise) and if i try and access the sound controls the pc hangs.

At the same time as this first started, IE will randomly stop responding and freeze completely when it tries to load a web page, any new ie windows also freeze immediately, and i can't close the prog (not even ending task in task manager)

Since then, the problem has also spread to Outlook, which will randomly stop responding.

I know this sounds like a virus, but i've got the latest copy of mcaffee and it can't find any problems, neither does xp's scan disk

I can't fuind anything onthe web that has sorted this (updates/patches from microsoft, various fixes etc) and it's got the it guy here stumped as well.

I'm a little bit pissed off with this now and i'd really appreciate any help you guys can give me.

    Cheers,

    Big man

could be loads of things , have you installed any new programs recent , check the memory - if you have 2 sticks in try running with one to see if one is faulty , or take sound card out and see if all works ok

Hi guys, cheers for the response.

Looks like the IT guy's had enough of me nagging him now, so it looks like a fresh format (at last). Finally - might be able to get some work done (or at least browse the web )

Unbelievable - This pc has USB speakers. IT guy unplugged them from the motherboard USB slot, put in a USB card, and plugged them into that. Working again
