    Default Mobile Phone Scam

A friend just sent this to me via e-mail which was forwarded on to him by a friend etc etc.

Not sure how true it is but better to be safe than sorry:-

    *******************

I work for my local county council, today we recived an OFFICIAL memo warning of a mobile phone scam.

If you recive a missed call message from any number begining 0709 do not return the call,it is bogus and you will be charged at £50.00 a min. This is totaly legal and you will have NO course for redress if you fall victim.
    Take care folks.

    ********************

Now i know Orange are sending messages stating that i have a missed call from such and such a number and they declined to leave a mesage but i don't know if other networks are doing the same.

    Keep an eye out

Numbers that begin 070 are "follow me" numbers and are NOT charged at premium rate.

The numbers in this particular scam begin 090 and ARE charged at premium rate.

A ruling was passed some time ago stating that if you intend to setup a premium rate line, then it MUST have the 090 prefix.

I think the most you can charge in the UK for a premium rate call is £1.50 per minute (although don't hold me to that).

A 10 minute call (which is about what these calls are supposed to last) would be £15 (which is what the news story claims the charges are).

i guess those are the two to really watch out for then ?

i've had loads of messages telling me i've been left a BCP (?) message and should dial a 090...number to recieve it to which i obviously thought "bollocks".

    cheers for the info.
