    Default PC restarting

OK i had a Athlon 1.4 chip 1 gig of ram on a gigabyte mobo. Recently the PC started shutting off randomly (temps OK)

I bought a new Chip (XP 2800) new Mobo (some gigabyte) new Case, RAM PSU and the fsking thing still shuts down randomly.

The only thing I havent changed is the HDD. Could random shutdowns be accredited to a ropey Hard disk?? (IBM 40 Gig Deskstar)

    Cheers

Did you do a fresh Op System install on your HDD or just keep the HDD unchanged? I would expect you did reinstall or you might have a shedload of new problems, just checking.

Sounds like the exact same problem as Epiphany is having - check the thread further down in this section and try some of the suggested stuff in there..

I had this problem a few times on different computers.
Even if I re-installed XP, the computer would keep re-booting.
I found the problem by not installing blackice security, then the problem was solved.
It was a network fault with XP/blackice.
If you catch the problem early, it won't bother your ram, but I have had to replace the ram on a few machines.
If you put in another hdd, and you still got the problem, then change the ram.
Another way I did it, (computer restarting) was to uninstall most programs, till the computer ran ok.

    I do this as a job, but I also learn't through trial/error.
I have a few pc's at home, so its easy and less expensive on buying parts that in the end may not fix your problem.

It could be your HDD failing. Try another HDD.

have you checked the ide cables inside from the hdd to the mb? If one of em is dodgy then it could be causing something dodgy to happen.
Have you tried installing a different os such as win2k?

since you've done pretty much everything, let's be more silly about this.
I assume you installed the same copy of the OpSys on both drives, have you tried installing for example W98? Another set of IDE cables? Also perhaps an issue with the outlet, I mean the socket in the wall? Have you tried another socket, and in case you are using a surgeprotector, then try without it.

EDITED: Just read Keymer's post above, where he suggest another OpSys as well as another set of IDE cables.

No different, different Hard Disk, RAM, Mobo, Case, PSU, Cooler, Power Cable, Monitor, Graphic Card, Keyboard, Mouse, Cables, power socket, room etc completely new lock stock and the c**t is still shutting down.

:'( This really really blows and I'm really getting fu*ked off with it. Anyone else got any suggestions?

Oh also tried with the CD Roms out.

Its weird, sometimes it's fine sitting on for 24 hours other times it cant last 2 minutes, or even make it to windows :/

Definitley a Motherboard problem. As always i'm going to say it's heat realated. What temperatures do you get and does the board have any shutdown features on for when the CPU overheats? Does this problem occur at all times or just when it's been on a while? I have an old board which does the same. Turns out to be an overheating Northbridge.

    Good Luck,

    Leeum

Its a gigabyte mobo, brand new. The CPU temp is only getting up to about 41 degrees so nothing astronimical...

Seems strange that both the old mobo and new mobo would do the same?

The mouse and keyboard are different ones, but both sets are USB. Should I try to get hold of a PS2 mouse and keyb?
