    Default norton 2004 problem

ok guys hope someone can help me with this :splease

norton 2004 was on and i decided it was crap so i unistalled it.

whilst uninstalling my pc shut down restarted and norton was still on.so i went to uninstall again. it told me i need to be logged on as the superviser.
strangley enough i was! but it seems that norton unistalled it before i had finished uninstalling.

now i cannot get rid of it and during start up its telling me there are componatns missing. well duh there will be i was uninstalling it :stupid .

so what i need now is to find out if there is any other way of getting rid of it without having to format? :|

cheers for any help in advance
    bb

You could run MSCONFIG and stop it trying to start up at boot-time (or remove it from the registry).

Or, you could try reinstalling it, then uninstalling??

yup that would be my first port of call, install it again, reboot then de-install again.

you needed to run msconfig and stop it from starting up before you tried to uninstall it cos when its running you cant do an uninstall so msconfig is the way to go now

Norton 2004 is a pile of poo, I've had stacks of problems with a number of machines. Twice I have encountered the error you describe. Once resulted in having to format because control panels 'add / remove program' stated I didnt have necessary rights (despite being logged on as admin!).

Second time it threw up errors relating to rights logged in as a user with admin membership but once I logged in as administrator it uninstalled ok (apart from all the crap it leaves in the registry that you have to remove manually).

If you add this to the numerous other faults such as the 'reinstall as a problem has been encountered' error, and the incompatible windows installer error on various Windows servoce packs, missing library DLLs, and runtime c++ errors when you load MS Office components I would steer well clear of Norton 2004 or NIS or Firewall.

Incidentally you could use the 2003 removal tools (2 of them) available for download via symantec and then clean up the registry manually.
