New Xbox Live Detection found

Team SmartXX is proud to present: The new secret Xbox-live detection code

Xbox Live is now checking each Xbox to see if the hard drive has been replaced. If your hard drive is any different than the one it came with, you will be banned, even if your new hard drive is locked.

This file is a disassembly of Xbox Live's security code as of today (March 6, 2004), and it shows that Microsoft is directing Xboxes to send their hard drives' identification back to Microsoft.

Note: At this moment I don't know if Microsoft is already really banning users. They might just collect this HDD-information for 'internal use'. Several people on the forums report they have been on live the last few days with a bigger HD and haven't been banned, but Microsoft sometimes takes a few days before enforcing a ban. More news about this detection soon ...

Yeh interesting this one isn't it, personally I think MS are stupid for banning people from live. At the end of the day all they are doing is losing themselves a revenue stream.

I know if I get banned I won't be going on it anymore.

I agree with not allowing people on with modded machines but all they need to do is kick them.

Sure they might detect it but I cant for the life of me seeing them banning someone when they are trying so so hard for new live customers.

This is fair enough as it ensures that only software signed by them is being run on their network. This will protect themselves from gits, and olso prevent mass cheating

k, i have 160 gig hdd and i aint been banned as of yet, was playing links last nite , no probs.... i guess we r gonna have to wait n see, but i rekon its bollox aswell...... time will tell.......

Well I agree with them kicking you if your using a mod (to prevent cheating) I don't agree with them banning you though and I think MS are losing revenue from this. If they ban due to HD they can shove there £40 a year up Bills arse!

I expect they are working out the numbers of who has a modded xbox (changed HD) and if its low enough they will then ban everyone at once.

I link bigger hdd's and mod chips together quiet easily... and I suspect Microsoft do as well.... why else would you have a bigger hdd in your xbox? hahaha soooo Mr.Smith why do you have a 160GB hdd in your xbox? errrr for my save points in my games. lol

Yeah, but.... as long as the mod chip isn't enabled. You cant play any backups. Therfore you have to have the original game and pay your £££ to m$.

Still dosent give you a suitable reason to put a bigger hdd into your xbox.... The machine can play the game from the dvd. Only uses the xbox for saves and updates...

Hmm well people have been cheating on Rainbow 6 on live. Maybe this is another measure to make sure only stock xboxs can access live?

If MS do indeed start banning people from Live who use no standard Hd's then if what they tell us is true then they will lose money no matter what the banned person does!?

ie.

The banned user decides to forget about live = LOST revenue in both Live subscriptions & original games sales

Or

The banned user decides to buy a ANOTHER Xbox just for Live which according to MS they lose money on. They will buy the same original games they would have if they only had one xbox but now MS has lost money on 2 Xbox's!!


Seems a lose / lose situation for MS if they start banning xbox's with large Hd's.
