The cheeky bast*rd.

Try reading it and you'll see he's not talking about actual money but CPU time, e.g.:
Instead of paying a penny, the sender would "buy" postage by devoting maybe 10 seconds of computing time to solving a math puzzle
so people buy faster pcs, or more pcs, from pcworld or some other shitty shop with windows preinstalled = money for microsoft?
if you use a email service other than hotmail and use some commonsense spam isnt a problem anyway

some clever git would work around it so all the spammers can send at there usual rate while every else is stuck with hanging computers while sending out there emails. Plus spammers don't send an email like we do, they send them directly from the server, usually free hosting services servers too.
solve a maths puzzle?? lol
wot if i is 2 fik to sulve a mafs puzzel?
Shooooooo-ryuken!
I run my own mail server anyway, so Gates can charge everybody else what he likes
not you you spaz, the computer
oE.
you being the funky computer chappy that you are, i take it you have done that thingie that you need to do to stop spammers from being able to use it? if everyone would do whatever that thing was (there was an url somewhere that told you about it - anyone have it) then spam wouldnt happen anyway.I run my own mail server anyway, so Gates can charge everybody else what he likes
it had something to do with stopping them from using it to relay mail. also bad for you cos it means all mail from your server gets added to filters and stuff.

I would imagine pegasus has :-)
I know I have done to mine ne way.
oE.
if you have done it then do you know the url you can use to check if yours is vunerable? hopefully get everyone to check and fix
i don't know much about email servers tbh, only type of server i havnt set up just for the sake of it this is making me want to though...
anyway as usual i am taking this thread miles off topic.
surely as peagasus said if microsoft introduced this all the people who use non-microsoft email servers would just refuse to do it, to avoid hassling their real customers?
plus the companies would be paying money to use the CPU time - where does the money go? also what are they calculating? might seem ok like seti style stuff but they could just be using that cpu time to plan bomb droppings or something

I use several programs to scan my pc, but LAN guard is probably a good starting point.
as for URL's on how to tighten it up i dunno m8t, try google I done mine through experiance and reading security bullitins at work.
good anti spam / hack hint tho.
If you dig through MSDN you can find how to adjust the IP stack on windows so a scan of your PC will give the impression of being a unix box when its a windows one.
Then if someone trys to attack it with a unix attack they get nowhere. My firewall logs show ppl launching unix attackes several times a day to no effect :-)
oE.
well there ya go then2 fik
Shooooooo-ryuken!
Quality tip, am on it!Originally Posted by oE
TwoSheds, they dont want to charge money, they want to charge processor time, so that you dont notice much delay when sending a few emails, but if you try sending 1,000,000, your PC would take forever.

No mate, I left it open so anybody can use it to send crap any time they likeOriginally Posted by TwoSheds
Yes TwoSheds, that was one of the first things that got done as soon as it went online.
i mean what does the cpu time do? it must do something for someone and they must pay for it.
Pegasus lol when you say it like that it sounds obvious obviously common knoledge amongst techies - i am gonna try the one at school actually cos the techie there is an idiot - "that pc isn't going to break" me:"yes it is" i have just been told that the fire has finally been put out. rofl anyway thats just me being enourmoulsy smart as usual
good to know you and oe are helping stop spam if you had a router/firewal would that not accidentally stop outside acess anyway? as in you actually have to set it up to work from outside? i hope so for the sake of anti-spam people
