Default hard drive asking for format

hello really need some help i run my pc with a 20gb ibm drive for windows thats not the problem i run a maxtor 120gb 8mb buffer drive on my pci ide card to keep a backup but when i moved the harddrive from one pc to another windows asks do you want to format the drive and the information on the drive is very important to me.

i used the maxtor software to confirm the drive aint fuked. When i goto manage drive using the windows software 30gb is healthy and in use but 80gb is unaloccated i remeber that the information on the drive adds up to 30gb please help this information is too important to loose so i dont want to format i tried using partition magic but that doesnt want to even format it, throws an error and it recodnises the drive as a full120gb unlike the windows soft theirs no operating system on drive it just runs along side.

    please help :nowords:

The motherboard on the PC you moved it to, does it normally recognise hard drives of 120 Gb size? It could be the Motherboard/bios of the 'new' machine that is the problem.

Or is the drive formatted in NTFS and the second PC is before Win2000/XP, and wont see the NTFS partition?

are you still using the PCI IDE card to connect the drive ?

if not ...... then do that to get at your data untill you can transfer it.

try this :- whichever pci card your using try connecting both hard drives to the pci card, put your boot drive to master and your storage drive to slave, and configure the jumpers to m/s, if the card has its own bios, you must select the boot device in both the card bios and the system bios, the system bios should be set to scsi (even though the card is ide).

what pci card make and model are you using ??.
