you do realise it starts downloading as soon as you click the link even if you have not chosen where to save the file too.. maybe you were called away or fell asleep for a few minutes between clicking the link and clicking save. so it was just about to finish when you chose where to save it and hence only started the timer from when you clicked save.

:/ just re-read that to myself and i think it makes sense :/

adsl and cable can "burst" when u get a sudden rush of bandwidth. It takes a few seconds but the limit you pay for should then start to be enforced.

Not really true i'm afraid as windows lies to you.. what your experiencing is the few seconds from when your pc starts downloading to when the download progress window is shown

hence a 10 second delay between you pressing the download button and choosing where to save the file to would cause at 100k/s on a 1.5mb file would appear to download in just 5 seconds and show an average speed of 300k/s

    Somebody please confirm this

I can't get this to happen with mozilla or internet explorer, older version of ie used to start downloading possibly. There is no network activity when I'm waiting to press OK on the save box.

What may of happened is the file was partially downloaded previously, I've seen strange numbers appear in ie when that occurs as it restarts the download from the point where it finished previously. :nowords:

Another reason could be if he is on cable, that his modem might have the wrong config file at the time.

Possibly he is running a local proxy that did the fetching as soon as it was clicked.

Maybe the pixies were on speed at the time, so downloading was much faster

the first time i dl'd it, it was massivly quicker than normal, i never fell asleep or anything in fact ive just dl'd it again and its still incredibly quicker than normal

Its a spike. Happens when hardly anyone or no one else is on your route to the download and the server blasts the file at you which accounts for the high speed transfer. Your modem then starts enforcing the speed limits after a while. Much more chance of this happening since its a blueyonder server and not many hops away and hence more chance of the path being clear, than a server in Australia where it would be almost impossible for this to happen.

Experienced this a few times on dialup years ago when it was more common because of less internet traffic - 5mb in about a minute on a 33.6k although the file was corrupt as the telephone lines couldn't handle that kinda data transfer speed.
