Default System process at 99%....help me.....

Help! I have a Duron 1.2, 512mb ram with GF2 GTS running win 2k pro with sp4. I run Adaware every two or 3 days, plus I have Viruscan, updated daily. Today I went to boot up and the system is running incredibly slowly. I checked out the processes and System process (not system idle) is using 99% CPU constantly, and hence I cant do anything at all with the pc. I tried in safe mode and the System process is doing the same. I cant even access the device manager to disable any devices to see if its a driver issue. The only thing I can think that has affected this was to install a windows update that was auto downloaded last night.

Does anybody have any ideas as to what this is about, or how I can get a breakdown of what is involved in system process?

Thanks in advance for any help.

    Dave.

Try Pressing F8 and going through step by step start up to see what proces could be causing it, you can select what windows will and won't run.

Thus finding out what is causing the problem.
