After managing to tear up my contract with Tiscali Broadband, i now need to connect to another ISP.
I basically want a cheap 512k connection, any recommendations bearing in mind:
Speed
Reliability
Customer Service
Cheers

im afraid u aint gonna really get all three ( or 4 as you mention cheap ) , it relally depends on what u want as your main option.I basically want a cheap 512k connection, any recommendations bearing in mind:
Speed
Reliability
Customer Service
speed : well i would probably say that all are roughly the same and only a few k/s difference .
reliability : the more money they spend on infrastructure the better the reliability so id tend to stick to the most well know ones ( demon , plusnet , eclipse , nildram , pipex to name a few )
customer service : tough one , i usually tend to find that the CS is either none existant , or premium rate , or if u got some idea about you , you may very rarely use it .
also u got to consider that alot of ISP's are using capping on their services so @ first it may seem very cheap , but you may only get 1-2Gb per month .
i use Nildram and have for last 9 months and have no probs what so ever , ok they may seem a bit expensive ( i pay roughly £39 for 1Mbps line with 150Gb per month limit ) but they got an excellent infrastructure and backbones and i only used there CS once and that was to find out me homepage settings .
as for a cheaper alternative , you could always checkout www.e7even.com as they seem to have sum decent prices .
for sum good info try http://www.adslguide.org.uk/ but remeber just because one or many people have a certain problem , doesnt mean that you will have the same
good luck with your choice
I use Freedom2surf speed is excellent, reliability is very good, CS the only downside as they only work 9-5 (although I think this is being extended) however the unoffiical freedom2support site exists which has people on who will answer questions and adslguide. However the support people do know their stuff and respond quickly by email, telephone support is by calling 01727 (st albans) no 50p/min cr*p.

i get between 50 and 60 on a 512 adsl connection, when my brothers arent whoring it all with internet games and stuff! its normally closer to 60 and rarely breaks, btinternet has a bad rep but it's not that badOriginally Posted by urbanmiffs

there isnt a 512k anymore its now 750k, i get about 90kb/s all at £25 a monthOriginally Posted by urbanmiffs
I'd deffinetly reccommend Telewest blueyonder likes! 1.5mb for £37.99 a month or is you have another Telewest product eg. pnone line rental, your 1.5mb is £35 a month.
You get this aswell:
30Mb of personal web space (you can purchase more webspace, does anyone know of a monthly bandwith on it?)
5 blueyonder personalised email accounts(which means about 15 e-mail address :nowords
Remote Dial-up Access - allows you to check emails from a different dial-up connection
Access to the Multi Player Gaming site
Technical Support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
A guide to helping you get the most out of broadband internet
Does anyone know if there's a monthly Bandwith usage? I dont think there is :nowords:
Customer service is not bad, my opinion is that if you keep it simple then their good but as soon as you start doing complicated things with them they have loads of rules which then conflict! ie. My mum moved out and took the current account with her (they send out a technician to make sure it was disconnected or something (lost a morning of school because of it ) :| ) Then my dad made a new account with them and it took about 2 weeks to become active because of an "outstanding work order" It was pretty confusing and everything. The dumb thing is my mum has an account which is different from the old one eg. different user names and account numbers (makes me think its a new account :nowords: )
Then in the whole confusion of the switching accounts my e-mail address which was on my mums account went missing (lost in blueyonders computers, i had to phone up for them to find it and free it up) got it back adventually tho. anywayz my rant over! it's went slightly :offtopic :oops
But like i say keep everything basic with them and they'll handle it well! I'd think they're the best for Speed:cost ratio :nowords:

I can't fault em my 3 meg line is class, I upgraded since sampling their 512 at every opportunity . The new 3mb service is well up for the job. Hats off to them for pulling it off.

Im currently on Nildrams 2mb service at £58 inc VAT per month then £3.50 inc VAT for static ip.
I am in the process of migrating to Plus.net's 2 mb service at £39.99 inc VAT with free static ip. Check out www.plus.net for details on other services and also www.adslguide.org for forums of various isp's including Nildram and Plus.net.
Also Migration to plus.net is free for an anual contract or if you prefer monthly all you pay is £14.99 inc VAT.
Regarding plus.net. they use the same peering network as Nildram, so in theory I should see the same type of pings and download speeds as I am getting now. Nildrams service is excellent, just a shame their prices dont match them.

I used to be with PIPEX until last year when I moved house and I had quite a few problems with them. To be fair I think a lot of the problems were at the exchange but the CS was utter sh*te and reading the forums at ADSLGuide they don't seem to have improved much.
As my local exchange is finally going to be enabled in August I'm currently looking at PlusNet who are doing 1 mb for £29.99 no caps. :thumbs
Plusnet 512k at £21.99 a month seems to be a good deal, got some good reviews.
Just need to get my CBUK number and my BT Connection product, does anybody know how to go about this?
cheers
