Police hunting Mark Hobson, wanted in connection with two double murders, have arrested a man in North Yorkshire, according to eyewitness reports.

Officers sealed off the A19 by the village of Shipton in North Yorkshire just before 1700 BST on Sunday.

Police want to speak to Mr Hobson after the murders of twin sisters and an elderly couple both in North Yorkshire.

Officers are expected to make a "major" announcement from North Yorkshire Police headquarters.

Carol Kennedy, who lives near a service station on the A19, told the BBC the garage had been sealed off and the road blocked.

Another eyewitness, Ann Hainsworth, who pulled into the service station, told the BBC the wife of the owner of the garage came running out saying: "We've got him, we've got him".

Church prayers

Mrs Hainsworth said that Derek North, the owner of the garage, called the police after he thought he recognised Mr Hobson when he came in to buy matches.

Police launched a national manhunt for Mark Hobson

Mr Hobson has been missing for one week, when the bodies of his girlfriend, Claire Sanderson, 27, and her twin sister, Diane, were found dead in his flat.

Later that day the bodies of pensioners James Britton, 80, and his wife Joan, 82, were found at their home in Strensall.

About 60 worshippers gathered in Strensall on Sunday to remember James and Joan Britton and Diane and Claire Sanderson.

The Rev Martin Harrison said the village had been left shocked by the events.

"Police cars outside the home of Mr and Mrs Britton have acted as a terrible sign that a week ago this very day wickedness and evil visited our village, possibly evil in the vilest and in its most cowardly form. "Today we remember the past week. We pray for Mr and Mrs Britton, their family and friends, also remembering Claire and Diane Sanderson and their relatives as we ask for you to comfort them at this difficult time."
