Question Sending .avi files through company e-mail...

My brother lives in SA and wants to send some video through his company e-mail. However his works e-mail blocks all .avi files no matter what you do to them. Is there any way to bypass the .avi filter or will he have to copy them to cd and send them in the post. He has only got a slow speed modem at home.

How big is this .AVI file to start with?

If it is more than 10MB ish then he is never going to successfully send it anyway whether it is ziped or not (all the ISP's I know have a size restriction on attachments for obvious reasons).

try renaming it to .bmp or .jpg.

All he will need to do then is rename it back

The e-mail monitor at my brother Wek can recognise video files even if you Zip them or use WinRar etc. Oh well, will have to rely on SA's dodgy postal system, and hope that no more items get "lost" in the post. Anyway my brother shouldn't be such a tight-wad and get broadband at home.

password the zip files - the filter will not be able to scan them. - It will then block them as encrpyted files instead and your bother should be able to call the IT helpdesk and get these released into his mail without having to tell the support staff what they are - call them accounts or similar. The new range of fitering software can open zips/rar and check the contents unless they are passworded and these are held.

thanks, i will paste your reply and send it to my bro. He is quite high up in the company so he might be a bit unwilling to bend the system that much, however he says that employees rights are so good in SA that it is virtually impossible to sack you (jeese I want to move there, NOT!!!!). Anyhoo thanks again for the help, and if it works I will be so happy as my brother reckons he is a wizz at computers and would be really peed off if I found out something he didn't know.

No probs - I used to do mail filtering for a living so I suspect its his only choice.

I use to use a program called camoflage, you selected the file you wanted to send, then select a jpeg file and it covers the main file, no matter what you do, you can not get into it unless you have camoflarge to uncover it.
    You can find it here
