Lower Matecumbe Key, FL, Jul. 26 (UPI) -- An 18-wheel trailer dangling from a Florida bridge at Matecumbe Key near Mile Marker 71 Monday was hauled back onto the road by a crane.
The accident closed the Overseas Highway linking Miami with Key West, Fla., for more than six hours, but traffic began moving shortly after the trailer was righted, the Florida Sun-Sentinel reported.
Officials said the trailer was hanging by a rear tire 80 feet above the water where the Atlantic Ocean and Florida Bay meet.
Officials said the tractor-trailer rig collided with another vehicle at about 6:30 a.m. That caused the truck's cab section to separate from the trailer, which plunged through the guard rail.
The cab remained on the bridge. One person in the vehicle that was hit suffered minor injuries and was treated at a hospital.
Traffic was backed up for miles in both directions. Several motorists managed to make a U-turn and return to where they came but others waited for the road to clear.
