Bristow - Drew Patterson wanted to protect himself after hearing reports of a fugitive in his north-eastern Oklahoma community.
He didn't think he would be nursing a sore rear end.
Aware of an escaped prisoner lurking about, Patterson tucked a .22-calibre pistol into the waistband of his denim shorts. But he left the hammer pulled back, and soon enough the gun went off, shooting the 27-year-old in the left buttock.
"I had good intentions, but I screwed the whole thing up," Patterson said, calling the shooting "one of my most embarrassing moments".
"At first, I didn't feel anything at all," Patterson said on Thursday.
"Then about 30 seconds later, I felt that burning, stinging," followed by something warm trickling down his left leg - blood.
Patterson said he walked into his parents' home and told his mother: "I did something bad."
Patterson was prompted to arm himself by news that Raymond Lee Smith, a 26-year-old facing charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon on a police officer, had managed to escape a Bristow courtroom on Wednesday.
The suspect remained at large on Thursday, while Patterson was recovering from his wound.
Doctors told him to keep walking to avoid complications as the wound healed.
"It hurts fiercely now," he said, walking slowly and gingerly.
