    Xbox xbox live slow conection

hi all, need a little help.

i've just got my xbox online, but don't get a good conection speed, i get booted out of all the game i enter, is there anyway i can speed up my conection.

i'm using telewest broadband 750kb, motorola surfboard 5100 modem,

    i've also got a network cable 1000mbps.

i don't use the pc the same time i use the xbox.

also can i change my user name xbox online, i tried to change it last night, but it asked for all my details again and a subscription code. can i enter the same subscription i used the first time i setup the xbox live?

I believe that you need to have a good upload speed aswell as download.
You can check your speeds by going to www.adslguide.org
Here, you will be able to compare your speed to a standard.
As well as that, you could phone the XBox Live support (number should be on the XBox site) and they can tell you if the upload and download speeds are sufficiant.

It may be that you should only join games with a small amount of people. Always check the speed indicator for the games.

Another thing, do you have your XBox connected to your PC to access Live? If so, something may be limiting your speed, such as a setting somewhere or if you are downloading stuff at the same time.

    Let us know.

If your using ICS I'd check your PC for Spyware/Virus etc sounds like something is eating up your bandwidth..

    Nice test site...
    I get to the UK
    Downstream (921.0 KB/sec)
    Upstream (245.9 KB/sec)
    Should be good enough for 1 vs 1 PES 4 : )

With my 1Mb BT Broadband connection I'm geting the following -

    Downstream 925 Kbps (115.6 KB/sec) 999 Kbps (inc. overheads)
    Upstream 242 Kbps (30.3 KB/sec) 261 Kbps (inc. overheads)

This, I believe, is pretty standard for a 1Mb connection.
Your downstream seems pretty proportionate to mine but your upstream (which is important to Live) seems a little on the low side. It might be that your provider has limited you on that. It might be something you can take up with your ISP.

Those speeds are correct.... I run my live on the same speed with no probs at all. When you connect to a game it has your ping to the right side... its like 4 dots...

    1 being the worst
    4 being the best...
    whats yours?

depends really, what time i go online:nowords: , some times taking out the headset gets my stars up to 3, thats the max i get (rainbow six 3),

i've got a few online games but i only play rainbow six 3,

other times i don't get any at all, just plenty of lag

i was thinking of upgrading to 1.5mb (can't relly afford that at the mo)

could it be my network cable,
maybe a cross over wire cable might be the right one,
    i've got a 1000mbps at the mo.

I doubt it would have anything to do with the network cable. If it's a standard UTP (Unshielded Twisted Pair) then that would be fine.
I'll have a look at the specs of your modem and get back to you.

Right, I've had a look through the Motorola web site and although the networking diagram shows a router between the modem and all equipment needing web access, this shouldn't be required as you are only using either the PC or XBox seperately. The router will let you plug more than one thing into the modem (so to speak) but for your requirements it isn't needed.
I'll have a look through the .pdf manual when I get home and see if I can find anything else that might help although I do have a feeling that the problem is down to either the ISP or the amount of people in the game you want to join.

You did plug a filter into each phone line, didn't you?

If I'm looking at the Telewest website correctly, you are paying £27.99 or £25 for a 750K connection. That's a bit steep. I'm currently paying £29.99 for a 1Mb connection with BT and that's still a rip off. Central Point (www.central-point.co.uk) are doing a 2Mb connection for £35. That is what I'm going to go for as soon as I can.

Anyhow, boot up your XBox, go to Settings (you may have to press 'B' to see it, go down to connect. Once it has passed all of the checks, press 'Y'. This will show some stuff about your connection to Live.
Check the time after 'L:', this is the latency of your connection. Mine is stating 163ms. Hopefully yours should be something similar. Also, the 'P:' shows a ping rating. This should be 20/20. The seem to have done away with a definative Upload and Download indicator for some reason since the newer release of the Dash, making it harder to determine any problems such as this.

    Let us know the outcome.

Hmmm did you make the cable yourself.... or is it a retail one... if you did make it try retail cable... as for your dsl it should be more than enogh to play X-Box live.Failing that I'd talk to your ISP about your lag and get them to test the line.

Oh well. I think that if you are unable to get them to understand the problem you are having then I'd prob just wait until your minimum contract is up and change to another ISP. You'll be able to get a faster connection for a fraction more than you are paying currently. Hopefully you aren't tied up to a whole 12 months.

Have you managed to try looking at the settings I suggested with your XBox?
