    Default Service Pack 2 problem

I install it, it goes fine...

Then when it reboots the Windows XP logo (splash screen) just stays there and then it goes all different colours.

Then after about 2 minutes, aload of different coloured lines come on my screen.

Someone said its my video driver. I have tried the driver that came with my laptop, another driver from my laptops website, and even nvidias latest driver.... but still no luck

    Anyone have any ideas?

Just a thought, perhaps you could repair any damage by changing your Bios Setting (temporarily) to boot-up from your WindowsXP CD-Rom. Then from your XP Install CD - use Recovery Console when prompted, - choose REPAIR - and maybe tackle the problem from there.
I have always thought, that installing Roxio's GoBack is an excellent idea, it sits there and does it's job before XP kicks in, in this instance, you would have been able to regress the computer to the point in time prior to the SP2 install.

Sorry ...should have added a better way. Boot up pressing F1 on the keyboard - gives you the SAFE MODE, log on as administrator, this gives you the Windows special diagnostic mode, from there use the system's "System Restore" feature - it could work.

It does sound like a problem with your video adapter. What is the VGA card you have? If you only get this problem on the display once the Windows display comes up, it is probably just the driver.
Boot to safe mode: restart an tap F8 (not F1) repeatedly as soon as your system beeps, before the windows logo comes up. You will get a boot menu. Pick safe mode. If that boots up OK, the the problem should be fixable. How do you install the other display drivers?

You can also try picking the Enable VGA Mode option from the boot menu (the one you get when tapping F8 after POST) That should boot Windows using a standard VGA driver.
I have installed SP2 on numerous PCs and only had a couple of small problems with software apps. Nothing this serious. There is an option to uninstall SP2 from the add/remove link in Control Panel. try this as a last resort.
Another thing to try when you get to some desktop, either through VGA Mode or Safe Mode, is to do a diagnostic boot. Do this by going to Start>Run, and typing MSCONFIG. Click run and then in the window that appears select diagnostic startup. Then reboot and see what happens.

Good luck, these kinds of problems can REALLy try your patience! :grr:
