History of PG Tips
Brooke Bond first launched PG tips in 1930.
Today the brand is established as one of the UK's number 1 tea brand and is a market leader in the UK tea bag market.
In the 1930s tea was sometimes sold on its medicinal properties - indeed, one blend had become successful through a campaign directed towards doctors and nurses and was even sold in chemist shops. Tea was deemed to be an aid to the digestion.
To challenge this competition, Brooke Bond introduced a blend known as "Digestive". After the second world war, however, the Ministry of Food would not allow Digestive as a trade description of tea, so Brooke Bond changed the name to PRE-GESTEE with, on the label, a disclaimer to the effect that "Brooke Bond do not claim any medicinal, nutritional or dietary value for their tea.
Parcels of the tea 24 x ¼lb packets, wrapped in brown paper for delivery to grocers) bore the letters PG as an identification and so the tea became known as PG Tips a name that has remained ever since its use in 1950-1.
Christmas 1956 - The first PG chimps TV commercial was aired. They advertising campaign was to become the longest running campaign of any brand in the UK.
1985 - PG Tags, tea bags on a string, were introduced
1996 - PG Pyramid bags were launched. The result of four years of research it developers believed it was the first new type of tea bag since the invention of the square tea bag. The new 3D shape provided as much as 50 percent more room for the tea leaves to move around when boiling water was added. The extra dimension meant the teal eaves could infuse with the water more effectively and provide 50 percent more tea flavour. The new bag shape was joined by a new 'caddy' shape packaging. The box had a hinged lid which when lifted revealed an inner top with a perforated tear out panel to access the tea bags. The launch was advertised with TV adverts featuring the Tipps family, the chimp family who had advertised PG throughout the 1990s.
2002 - PG T-birds advertising began. The adverts were created by the award winning Aardman Company, who also created the Wallace and Gromit films. The PG T-Birds were called Maggie, Pete, Holly and Tom.
May 2003 - PG Tips launched the Freeflow pyramid tea bags, the latest innovation in tea bag material. The unique 'webbed' non-perforated material design promised to brew the ultimate cup of tea. The new material was 50 per cent more permeable than the older style pyramid bags.

WHAT DOES 'PG' STAND FOR IN 'PG TIPS' TEA?
In the 1930's some teas were believed to have certain digestive properties. One brand in particular was extremely successful because it supposedly aided digestion. However, there were legal objections to the use of the word "digestive" in connection with the tea so a Director of the tea company re-named it "Pre-Gest-Te. Bulk packs of the tea bore the letters PG and the tea soon became known to the trade as PG. 'Tips' was added because only the most tender leaves and buds are used in its manufacture.
