Links to sites

Hi all,

Not sure if this is the right place to post this but worth a try.
If I put a link to another website for some reason then I'll just put in the URL and leave it at that, giving whoever views the topic the option of just clicking the link.
However, I have noticed that some people replace text in the links with '*' and all sorts. I've even seen someone edit their own message to remove some key letters.
What's all this about? Are we not supposed to give full links or something? I've never noticed a mod editing a link or spanking arses because of this. Nothing is mentioned in the rules either (not that I can find).

When the link is edited (ie h**p://) - no referrer can be sent.

This means that no one can tell that you got to their site from DF. It's not always necessary, but in some cases (quite often in the cheapskate corner) it's preferable not to let someone know that they are getting all their hits via this site

if you want to make a link to a news story or whatever then it isnt really nessesary and just annoying so dont bother

only times you need it is like "wow look you can get every item from this online shop free, http://twoplanks-online.com " or whatever, obviously i'd get a massive surge of hits and wonder wtf was up with all the customers and no bank balance, check the referer logs and see everyone was coming from df, realise i was accidentally selling stuff for free cos of the message in the post and fix it, thus no more free stuff for you. that's the only time u ever need to type stars in the names

just to let you know i made up that adress on the spot and if it works then its by sheer chance alone, the site's not associated with me

The correct way to do this would be to untick the 'Automatically parse links in text' option:
