    Default Networking Problem

    I've got a problem with my network at home, basically its 2 computers linked together via a hub (or directly via a xover cable, just recently changed to hub).
    I can share files and folders however i cannot access the internet on the second computer through the first one, i have a usb dsl modem and that is plugged in computer 1, computer 2 cannot access interent, the ip addresses are opened for each machine, can someone help, its driving me crazy...

    thanks

    if your using xp (prrofessional) and your using 1 pc as a gateway tor internt access to the other, then you need to enable Internet Connection Firewall

    are you using zonealarm , i had similar problems , read up on ICS and typed it into google to find out more , can't remember websites/forums i went to there were too many , i ended up adding a trusted zone in zonealarm for the DNS server of my ISP , if that don't make sense PM me , but i am not sure what a DNS server is I just did what somebody else recommended

    DNS = Domain Name Server

    A DNS works in a very similar way to the postcode system that is employed by Royail Mail.

    Every computer in the world that is connected to the internet has it's own unique IP (Internet Protocol) address.
    These addresses take the form of 123.456.789.012, and it is through this address that data is sent & received.

    Now us humans ain't that clever at remembering long numbers, so it is far easier for us if we give websites "friendly" (canononical) names instead (eg, Digital Forums).
    Unfortunately, computers don't understand the "friendly" names we give to another computer and would much prefer to work with numbers.

    Now when you go to your favorite website (eg, Digital Forums), the info you request goes to a special server that your ISP has stashed away, which takes the name of the site you have requested, looks it up in the database and converts it back to the correct IP address so that the data you requested can be retrived sent back to you.

    By entering the IP address of your ISP's DNS server in your browser settings, you are telling your browser exactly where that "lookup" table can be found.

    Hope that clears things up for you a bit.

    theodotcom , you haven't actually told us what you have tried , have you turned firewalls off and tried it ? , have you added the DNS address to your firewall . got to Network connections and right click on your internet connection , go to properties , Advanced , and check settings there - should be something like 'allow other computers to share this connection' . but let us know what you've done so far
