Motorola A835 problem

I recently bought a Motorola A835 without a sim card and the seller said that if i bought a 3 network sim it would then work ok. I've put a sim in and am getting the phone saying "Enter subsidy password".
Is there a default number for this i can try or must i contact the seller. So far i can't get hold of him.
Any help / advice appreciated.

Thanks for the reply, its not a 3 sim i tried but a t-mobile one. I thought it might still work but without some of the features.

no m8 you'd need a 3 sim to get it working but if you get the unlock code (subsidy code) and then it'll work with any sim

THanks for the reply, I bought a 3 sim card and i now get "enter unlock code" when i switch the phone on. Is this a code i need to unlock the new sim? I tried 1234 and the last 4 digits of the phone number but these don't work.
Could it be that the previous owner had the phone locked with a pin and its this code i need? Is there any software to find out the code from the sim or the phone?
