rs232 to usb

i need to connect to a device that has a usb connection, the software that i am using to read the device requires me to go through a commport, i have a rs232 to usb lead which connects to my pc's serial socket but will not go through a commport apart from buying a usb device 2 convert my pc's usb to a commport has anyone any other solutions?? cheers ..thebrain2!!:nowords:

What device is it?

Quite a few devices have built in USB to serial convertors so have you just tried plugging it in and installing the drivers? It may appear as a virtual com port that you connect to via the software.
