    Default Video streaming ?

I am after some software which will allow me to stream divx video from one PC to another PC. I have tried VLC Media Player which will allow me to stream a selected video which I select from the server to stream and it works fine, but I would rather have software where I can see all available divx video on the server PC from the client PC, select one, and then it starts streaming it from the server.

    Is there such software ?

Are you talking about streaming across the internet or your LAN?

If you are talking about your home network, then you don't need any software to stream the video at all, just use Windows Explorer to browse to the folder containing the media and then double click on it.

Yes I am talking about over a home network. And yes I do need to stream it. Over my 802.11g network, I find that if I do as you mention (browse the media on the network with Windows Explorer and then double click on it) that playback is jerky and unwatchable. But if I stream it, then it plays fine.

Thats why I am looking for some streaming software which allows me to browse just the media (not all files) on my server and then select one to start streaming it. I used to be able to do a similar thing with my Kiss DP500 player to my PC but I now want to be able to do the same from PC to PC.

I want to be able to select the video from the client and initiate the stream from the client. As far as I can tell, VLC doesnt allow you to do this.

I thought I would post my current solution (although it is not ideal) on the off chance that it helps someone else.

On the server PC I am now running a free web server (Abyss) and have installed VLC Media Player on the client PC. From VLC I can enter the URL of the film on the server, for example http://myserverpc/films/film.avi.

VLC will then stream it although I'm sure there are plenty of other players that will do the same. I prefer VLC because I dont need to worry about codecs being installed.

I used to just browse my wireless network in Windows Explorer and double click the avi but this would result in the film stuttering. With the new solution it plays smoothly.

Next task is to learn how to create a website so I can have a web page on the server which lists all the films on the server.

However, if anyone knows a simpler software solution to achieve all this, I would be very interested to know what it is.
