Default ActiveX problems & SP2 Install

Have a machine at work running SP1 XP Home, no matter how I try to put SP2 on there - downloading full version, Windows update, off a CD it either tells me there's a file missing or my activex controls won't support it.

No spyware or viruses, drive is defragged, same in safe mode.

Spent hours on it with no joy.

ActiveX controls are normally control in Internet Explorer - you should be able to chnage these setting by opening IE - tools / options then the security tab.... Hit the button for custom level and they can be changed there.

You may however be out of luck and not be able to change these settings if its a work machine and System / Domain Policies are loaded. If this is the case a call to your work helpdesk would be the next step.

Have you checked for any other outstanding updates for XP SP1 before you try to upgrade.

I have found with all of the upgrades that I have done, that the BITS service (Backgroud Intelligent Transfer Service) has been upgraded.

Don't know if this helps, but hope so.

Wasn't security related, I tried dropping the settings in IE down to pretty much no security and it still didn't work. Also, I couldn't get to the Windows Update site to check for any other SP1 updates. All I got was the error message about Active X.

I gave up in the end. Gave it back to the customer, told them something was missing from Windows and if they wanted SP2 they'd need to format the drive and have a clean install.

    Thanks anyway.
