      Default Strange Windows 98 Problem

      Can anyone help me out on this. It's for a friends PC that is running Windows 98 SE

      Windows will suddenly fail and lockup, when i reboot, it doesn't load, If i boot from a disk and look at the windows folder most of the files have been renamed with a ? at the start.

      Here's what i've tried and now i'm stumped

      Checked for Virus (latest definitions installed) - PC is not connected to Internet anyway

      Reinstalled 98 from clean intall. - Failed again,

      Can anyone help out on this,

      Getting him to run some diags on the machine now. Will come back if there is still a problem .

      Try running scandisk and see if there are any corrupt sectors on the HDD.
      May have something to do with it.
