The man u want is Tony Buzan, he basically invented the mind mapping system. It can work very well, basically it tries to get the brain to think things out, memorize, learn things etc on the same kind of level that the brain actually works on. Traditional linear methods are quite simply not a good representation of how the brain works. By using different colours and visuals and then spreading ideas out in many directions we can work things out in a more natural and efficient manner.
Tony Buzan has written quite a few books on the subject, some very small and simple to follow others longer and more detailed. He's like the grand daddy of brain and learning thoery. He's also written loads of other books on memory, speed reading etc.
I'm wish i was taught these kind of techniques at school.
