Greek centre-back set to join Rangers in £1.7m deal
January 18 2005
RANGERS seem certain to end their search for a central defender to replace Jean-Alain Boumsong by signing Sotirios Kyrgiakos, the Greek internationalist, this week for a fee of £1.7m.
Reports in Greece said agreement had been reached between the Ibrox club and Panathinaikos for the transfer of the 25-year-old and the player's agent, Steve Alexiou, revealed he expected Kyrgiakos to travel to Scotland tomorrow to undergo a medical. Providing there are no problems with that examination, he will put pen to paper on a two-and-a-half year contract, believed to be worth £12,000 per week. "The player will go to Scotland on Wednesday," confirmed Alexiou.
Kyrgiakos' contract was technically due to expire at the end of the season, but Panathinaikos had the option to extend for a further 12 months meaning they could demand a higher fee for the 6ft 3in defender, who has developed a reputation for his fearsome physical strength.
Premiership sides Everton, Portsmouth and Southampton had all been tracking Kyrgiakos, who had initially expressed some reservations about playing in the UK. Rangers, however, appear to have made a convincing case to the player who is of an age to have a reasonable sell-on value.
The move for Kyrgiakos, capped 10 times, has surely finally killed off Alex McLeish's interest in Stephane Henchoz, the Swiss internationalist who is available on a free transfer from Liverpool. Henchoz now seems likely to join Bolton Wanderers.
It was a match against Rangers that cost Kyrgiakos his chance to be part of Greece's victorious Euro 2004 squad in Portugal last summer.
He damaged knee ligaments in the 1-1 Champions League draw between Panathinaikos and Rangers in October 2003 and endured a lengthy spell in rehabilitation before returning to action 10 months ago.
Rangers will also hold talks with Shabani Nonda this week in an attempt to persuade the Monaco striker to move to Ibrox on a Bosman transfer at the end of the season. They are also likely to sign Ian Murray of Hibernian by the same method.
In addition, Gregory Vignal's agent, Phillipe Flavier, will hold talks with McLeish today to facilitate a permanent transfer for the left-back who is on loan from Liverpool.
