    Default Sky+ question

    I already have Sky. If I buy a Sky+ box privately, and install it myself, will the Sky plus features just work, or will I need to get Sky to switch something on ?

    If Sky need to switch something on, will they try and charge me any extra ?

    TIA - Panda

    yes. 10 quid a month for sky+ subscription/functionality, unless you have one of the top 3 tier packages, in which case subscription is free. but i dunno how chuffed sky would be about u buying your own box. is it even possible since the cards are married to one box? dunno... maybe somone else can answer.

    you own the box with sky, so you can freely sell the box to whoever you like.

    I'm thinking about sky+ at some point, I'll be getting a box on ebay - it should be a case of putting existing card in box ringing up sky and getting the card and box paired by giving the relevent box id and card id. Don't forget you'll need a quad lnb installed and cables running if you get the box yourself.

    Thanks guys.

    Was looking at this for my mother-in-law as she is struggling with the video. Shame really, would have been good for her, but not for ANOTHER £10 a month.

    2 Tivos with lifetime subs just gone on Ebay for around £340 - £370 (cant remember exactly), take away £200 for lifetime subs and thats only £140 or so for a Tivo, a real bargain IMHO.

    sky+, isnt £10 extra a month....if you have 1 premium channel e.g. sky sports/movies its free you just pay a one off fee for the box (mine was £100). It is only £10 extra p/m if you have sky+ installed as a 2nd box (so you have 2 boxes in your house, i have sky+ downstairs and sky upstair), you will need sky to fit it tho as it uses a different cable to sky, cos sky+ feeds 2 streams at once thats how come you can do recording etc

    First of all I would just like to say that everybody has their own replies to certain threads within these forums. If the original starter of the thread does not make his/her question clear then there is going to be conflicting replies.

    In this case the original thread starter only stated that he already had SKY and that he was considering getting a SKY+ box. What he doesn't state is wether this is going to be a replacement for his standard SKY or an additional box! Therefore when he gets replies telling him different things, it is no wonder people get the wrong end of the stick. This does not mean that people should be having a go at each other because of this!

    I was only trying to provide the guy with some clear info...the other replies had a bit of this and that. Where as mine summed up everything he would need to know. It all looked a bit confusing.

    In future, i wont bother posting my replies then...i was only trying to help!

    my point was that earlier in the thread panda stated it was for somone else and that paying another 10 quid a month was not a viable option.

    then you wade in and say sky+, isnt £10 extra a month....if you have 1 premium channel which its fairly clear by this point that the person doesnt.

    so rather than providing some "clear info" you just insisted it isnt 10 quid a month when it actually is when u dont have a premium channel (which is the case).

    also... sinbrad and BomFunkDaddy, i dunno wtf you are getting worked up about.. all i said was "did you actually read this thread". no flaming, no swearing, no insults, nothing. so just chill the **** out and shut the **** up or ill show you some ****ing flaming. <-- note the smiley face, and dont take it to heart.

    hey marcode or anyone else that can answer. Sorry if im being thick and i'm dragging this subject up again, but i just wanted to check to make it clear;

    1) i can ring up sky and cancel my subscription, rejoin and pay only 99 pounds to get sky+ installed, but i have to pay £10 extra a month as i'm on the value package. (or add 2 premiums)

    or

    2) I ring sky up, give them a banter, and get them to install it for the same price without me having to cancel. and i would still have to pay £10 extra

    but i cannot do;

    3) buy a sky+ box with quad lnb and cable off ebay for £150, install it myself. Ring sky up and marry the card to the box and not have to pay the £10 extra a month.

    Is that right or can i do 3) ?

    David - option 1 is a no no - you can't cancel and rejoin as the cheaper offer on a Sky+ box is only available to new customers, they have your name and address on their system - when you try to sign up they'll spot you.

    Option 2 is again unlikely to work - Sky are good at this now - they have a price for new customers or a price for existing.

    Option 3 - you can buy your own box off ebay and ring up Sky - if you have 2 premium channels already then the Sky+ option is free, if you don't it's a tenner extra a month, assuming this is your only box.

    If you already have Sky with 2 premium channels and don't mind paying £10 a month for multiroom Sky are currently giving away Sky+ for £49 and free installation... http://existing.sky.com/offers.asp
