My DECT phone has quite a range.. in my neighours house it works perfectly.
So I bought a TwinTalk gadget (made by BT).. £30 from BT, or half that price on popular auction websites. Now both our base units are plugged into his socket (via TwinTalk gadgets - 2 come in the pack). We both have seperate phone numbers, and only 1 line rental between us. TwinTalk means that when people call my number (thanks to BT CallSign - £1.75 a quarter.. 3 months free with TwinTalk) only my phone rings, and when they call my neighbours original number, only his phone rings.
See www.twintalkhelp.com for more info. Don't be too put off about the blurb about problems with DECT phones.. mine & my neighbours both work just fine (including caller ID), a Doro and BT brand phone.
I have today taken GREAT pleasure in calling BT to cancel my landline. :thumbs
There are a few drawbacks: I don't think you can both use the phone at the same time, not sure what happens with ringback (both lines might ring?), only 1 answerservice (probably), 2nd charging base station needed (unless you want to go to your neighbours everytime your handset is low on juice). But I think the benefit of kissing that line rental goodbye easily outweighs these issues!
If you have ADSL this might not be for you??? Or maybe you can keep your ADSL but switch your ADSL line to "incoming calls only" (cheaper line rental).
One thing to consider is that your neighbour will be billed for your calls - I use the 18866 service, so none of my calls appear on his bill, my CC gets charged for them instead by 18866.com
If you don't know your neighbours... bake them a dish, go round and introduce yourself... then in a few weeks when you are on 1st name terms tell them about TwinTalk hehe. If anyone has any more questions about this setup ask me here and I'll post a reply.
